Vet to Vet Tennessee’s President Randall Scoot accepts a donation from the Sequoyah High School Beta Club donated $900.00. We are grateful to the Sequoyah students and teachers who provided us with this donation.
The donation will be used in Vet to Vet Tennessee’s student art contest, “Ethos Art.”
Through our program, Ethos Art, Vet to Vet Tennessee will combat the issue of social isolation faced by East TN middle school students due to COVID-19’s disruptions of school and community functions. Ethos Art is a service-learning experience for students to collaborate and produce artistic emblems for each Military branch to display within their school. Service learning builds each student’s sense of responsibility for and connection within their community (Yamauchi, Billig, Meyer, & Hofschire, 2006, as cited on youth.gov). The mission of our project is to promote the values of respect, teamwork, commitment, and gratitude among students. Ethos Art can strengthen our future communities’ foundations for civic knowledge and commitment. This program consists of implementing a four-day learning module in the Art classes of any 5 participating middle schools, followed by an awards ceremony open to community members. The award ceremony creates opportunities for community collaboration between schools and local government. Further discussion of increased community involvement is included in the Need Statement section.
Ethos Art can be financially sustained through partnerships with schools, businesses, Veteran Service organizations, juvenile courts, and art coalitions. Our first program conducted is currently being promoted by Judge Dwaine Thomas from the Juvenile Court in Monroe County Tennessee to strengthen relationships between schools and courts to prevent juvenile delinquency.
If successful, the measurable impact is improved civic values and lessened social isolation of students, measured via surveys and testimonies, and at least 10% of each school participating in the program.
