September 28, 2017 Louisville, Tennessee
September 28th was a memorable day for us. Thanks to training of TSPN Eastern Tennessee Suicide Prevention Coordinator Amy Dolinky, one of the techniques she taught us in December 2015 may have saved a life. We were taught to ask an attendee who is leaving the session to give a thumbs up if they are OK.

We have been using this technique in every session we teach. Yesterday during our regularly scheduled monthly training at Cornerstone of Recovery, Sheryn & Don Davis (Vet to Vet TN members and ASIST trained) saw a young Army Veteran leaving hastily and showed them a thumbs up. According to Don and Sheryn, the man looked very upset. So Don followed the soldier and spoke with him for about 30 minutes. Rod Jackson, Recovery Monitoring Program Director & Veterans Services Program Director followed up with the veteran immediately after our training and provided this follow-up report.
In the last three months, we have identified numerous veterans who have never disclosed their suicidal ideations and/or attempts.
Our program is enhanced because we are in a facility with professional suicide practitioners who are readily available. We are proud to have Rod’s Jackson’s support.
We want to thank Amy and TSPN for providing the suicide prevention and intervention training to members of Vet to Vet Tennessee. We are grateful and honored to serve.
