Knoxville Regional Veterans Mental Health Council Hosts Area’s First Local ‘Mental Health First Aid’ Training for Veterans and Family Members

Similar to ‘First Aid’ and CPR, ‘Mental Health First Aid’ helps those experiencing mental health problems before they can get professional help and support

WHO:            KVHC and 20 local veterans and family members

WHAT:           First-ever training on mental health first aid for Veteran in Knoxville

WHEN:           October 21st 0900-1600

WHERE:        Elmcroft of West Knoxville, 8024 Gleason Drive, Knoxville, Tennessee 37919

WHY:              Mental health problems – such as depression, anxiety, PTSD and misuse of alcohol and other drugs – are shockingly common in the United States. In fact, more than one in four American adults will have a mental health problem in a year. BlueCare Tennessee has been working with communities throughout Tennessee to implement Mental Health First Aid to arm the public with skills to help individuals who are developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis. The clinical and qualitative evidence behind the program demonstrates that it helps the public better identify, understand and respond to signs of mental illness, thus improving outcomes for individuals experiencing these illnesses. 1. The class on Oct 21 was excellent in all respects. Made me wonder why they haven’t been holding functions like these much more often in many more venues. The outrageous suicide rate among Veterans has been at totally unacceptable levels for decades. I’m glad people are finally taking this matter seriously. Again, the content and presentation were excellent.

  2. I was overwhelmed with the amount of information Ron Morton had brought to us. I liked how Ron added personal issues that coincided with the training. He gave us all an opportunity to ask questions throughout the day, that was beneficial to all attendees. Would love to have copy of his program.
    My regards to Ron

  3. The training provided on October 21, 2014 by Ron Morton was outstanding. Ron highlighted the importance of being aware of mental illness, its symptoms, and getting assistance for those affected by the disease. Great presentation and kept the information interesting. I highly recommend the training to any organization or individual that comes in contact with the public to aid and assist anyone who might need help with finding professional resources.

    Well Done and Great Job!
