Vet to Vet Tennessee, a 501c3 charity, presents its signature Veteran Specific Question, Persuade, Refer (VSQPR) Gatekeeper program that includes suicide awareness and prevention training. All V2VT’s peer mentors are VSQPR gatekeeper certified and several are QPR Institute certified QPR Instructors.
The first V2VT’s QPR Gatekeeper instructor was trained by Tennessee Suicide Prevention Network Executive Director Scott Ridgeway and East Tennessee Regional Coordinator Amy Dolinky in October 2015. At that time there was no Veteran Specific QPR training and as a result, V2VT developed VSQPR training modeled after the Council’s copyrighted PTSD Awareness, Intervention, and Resolution (PAIR) program; 1st VSQPR course was taught on October 24, 2015.
Every month, dozens of veterans, service members and military families reach out to fellow military families and to V2VT seeking assistance to talk to another Veteran, service member or civilian who understands what they are going through.
By signing up, we ask that you be willing to take calls, emails and visit with individuals in your area who may be struggling. We also ask that you let us know when you have successfully helped someone (without providing us any details) who is struggling so we can share how the program has helped veterans and military families.
We have partnered with the QPR Institute to offer online training to you as a Peer Mentor. QPR’s Gatekeeper course is taught in a clear, concise format using the latest in educational technology and practices. The course takes approximately one hour to complete.
KEY COMPONENTS COVERED IN TRAINING:
- How to Question, Persuade and Refer someone who may be suicidal
- How to get help for yourself or learn more about preventing suicide
